Philip Price information

Post by Andre » Fri May 27, 2005 10:43 am

Hi,

while browsing the web for more info on Philip Price (creator of Alternate Reality and Tail of Beta Lyrae) I stumbled across an old but interesting newsgroups entry entitled:

What happened to Philip Price

where the master himself :mr.green: is giving some answers.

Seems to be a very nice guy!

Apparently Mr Price is keen for the AR games to be distributed as widely as possible.

This is very generous, bearing in mind the complexity of the games, and the fact that no-one has yet worked them out completely.

It's a real pity that he didn't get to finish the planned series of games.

"The City" on its own is a great achievement, and the series is crying out for a motion picture.

I never understood why people liked Alternate Reality, the City.

Technically - graphics, sound, interface etc., the game was very primative even when it was released. But I played lots of crummy looking rpgs on the Atari and Apple II that I enjoyed.

There is no gameplay in the city. It is just a staging area for the subsequent modules, only one of which was released.

I'm curious to know if people who like AR the City actually finished the game, or did they just tinker around with it. Could you even finish it?

The City is not something you complete, it's something you experience.

Technically primitive graphics, sound and interface?
