Using an Atari Emulator on WIndows XP- for midi I/O

Post by cappy2112 » Tue Aug 12, 2008 4:36 pm

Hello,

This is my first attempt to use an Atari emulator.

I want to run a program in the Atari emulator on Windows XP, which sends midi data to a synthesizer.

Is this possible from an emulator?

If so, how do I configure the emulator to send midi?

Where would the midi interface on my PC be connected?

I typically use a USB-> midi adapter under Windows XP, but the Atari's existed before USB was around. I don't know if there is a way to map midi data from the emulator to a serial port or USB.

Thanks

I've heard that using MIDI on emulators is actually possible. I'm not a MIDI expert myself but I've heard that Tim's MIDI World is an excellent source for all things MIDI on Atari ST and for emulators like Steem for XP or NoSTalgia for Mac.

The following link explains how to setup STeem for MIDI use.

There's also a forum linkpage where you can probably find even more help.

Other (and maybe the better way) is to buy cheap 1040ST or Mega with SM124 display to get rock solid timing :)

Thanks, I'll check out those pages.

I dont need rock solid timing, I only need to output some patches into a synth.

These patches are in a format unique to the program which sends them, they are not in sysex format.

Once these are in the synth, I dont need the Atari or the program any more.
