history of tube baddies

Post by avram » Tue Feb 13, 2007 9:43 pm

What's the story behind Tube Baddies? Was it written for a particular software company and later released by Micro Discount? Or was it written for them? And does any documentation exist?

Actually, Tube Baddies was to be published by Atari's UK division. Catalog numbers were assigned for a number of games as well:
TX9044 - Slingshot
TX9045 - Tiger Attack
TX9046 - Heartache
TX9047 - Speed Hawk
TX9048 - Super Soccer => looking extremely similar to European Super Soccer
TX9049 - Black Lamp
TX9050 - Nucleus
TX9051 - Cygnus X1
TX9052 - Cavernaut => probably Cavernia
TX9053 - Zone Patrol
TX9054 - Contagion
TX9055 - Z-Force
TX9056 - Tube Baddies

Thanks for the response. So the game was commissioned by Atari? And I assume it didn't get released by them and instead was published in 1995 by Dererk Fern's Micro Discount?

I don't know if Micro Discount got in touch with Atari or Ivan Mackintosh... Our page isn't very clear about all this, it's one of the numerous entries that need an update to be honest. However, pretty sure Derek Fern picked up Zone Patrol and the UFO demo directly from Atari.

Actually, I'd really like to know if anything was ever planned beyond TX9056...

Actually Tube Baddies was not released by Derek Fern, but it was released by Richard Gore and sold by DGS....

Back in the late 80's/early 90's, just after Atari released the XF 551, Atari did a deal with Microdiscount/derek fern to sell of all Atari 8bit hardware inventory and component supply

I don't know if that was from Atari UK or from Atari US, I just remember the report as published in page 6

Atari Frog...I think you'll find that it was Zeppelin that released Cavernia (I used to have it on tape)

Although it was coded by the mackintosh/munns duo

Also there seems to be a query on the game Heartache as it's also supposedly called Heartbreak as well (used to have that on tape as well)

I think European super soccer was done by tynesoft (and probably rebadged by atari)

1 of the games you mentioned weren't officially released (Z- Force) it's available as a demo download from either jetbootjack or plastron's website (both are members of atariage)
